In 1967, Marie-Claire and Walter opened the St. Moritz restaurant, later adding La Tour in 1980 and Marie-Claire’s Espresso Boutique, all of which became beloved fixtures in Vail. While Walter worked behind the scenes in the kitchen, Marie-Claire was the heart and face of their establishments—welcoming locals and visitors alike with humor, elegance, and her signature twinkle in the eye. Known as one of Vail’s first and most gracious hostesses, she built lasting relationships and created community hubs filled with laughter, warmth, and memorable three-course meals. Jean-Claude Moritz, who shared their passion for hospitality, often provided support services that enhanced the dining experience. Beyond the restaurants, she had a special passion for rummage sales, delighting in the treasures she found and the connections they fostered, which reflected her joy in both people and life’s simple pleasures.
